Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
1224 PM PDT Mon Aug 24 2026
.KEY MESSAGES...
- Dry with seasonable high temperatures through the week, with a
cool down by the weekend.
- Elevated Fire Weather concerns for the northeastern Foothills
and Northern Sacramento Valley this afternoon and evening.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Satellite has clear skies across Interior Northern California,
with more scatted to broken clouds around NE California this
afternoon. A weak upper level wave moves along the southwesterly
flow aloft through CA this afternoon and evening bringing breezy
southerly winds to the Northern Sacramento Valley and adjacent
Terrain. The main synoptic forcing shifted through the region this
morning, with remnant energy over the Sierra Crest toward NV.
This area (east of the Sierra Crest) has the chance for isolated
thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Instability is lacking
within our forecast region along with the synoptic forcing to
develop thunderstorms. There still remains a low chance (less than
10 percent) for an isolated storm through 5pm within the Burney
Basin. Confidence remains low on any development as forcing is
limited.
Low RH values have been observed across the northern Sacramento
Valley and northeastern Foothills this afternoon. RH values will
continue to be in the teens through sunset and slowly recover in
the overnight. Winds are expected to continue to be breezy out of
the south in these areas. The wind combined with the low RH values
create Elevated Fire Weather Concerns through this evening for
the northern Sacramento Valley and into the northeastern
Foothills. Conditions improve overnight and tomorrow.
Otherwise, through the remainder of the week we are looking at dry
conditions and seasonable temperatures through the region. By the
weekend temperatures will begin to cool slightly. Periodic breezy
onshore winds through the Delta are expected through the week.
&&
.AVIATION...
We will continue to see VFR conditions through the TAF period,
with FEW to SCT clouds across the Sacramento Sites, RDD, and RBL.
Skies will clear out this afternoon/evening, with breezy southerly
winds for RDD/RBL with 20-25kt gusts. Around 03-04z winds will
subside slowly and go light and variable for RDD/RBL. SCT cloud
coverage move in overnight and into tomorrow morning for the
Sacramento sites, SCK, and MOD. Otherwise, breezy conditions
around the Delta this evening.
